Project Type: Film & Television
Job Date: Full Time
Compensation: $138,000 - $172,000/year

Sony Pictures Entertainment is hiring a Writer for Jeopardy!, based at their Culver City, California studios. This is a staff writing position on the Emmy Award-winning WGA writing team, responsible for producing original clue content across all rounds of one of the longest-running game shows in television production history. The role suits a writer with serious research instincts, a command of trivia across disciplines, and the kind of editorial precision that holds up under live game show production conditions.

About the Role

The Jeopardy! writing staff operates within the show’s editorial department, producing category content that feeds directly into the taping schedule. A typical week involves drafting new categories, running clues through the research review process, and being available on tape days to pull last-minute replacements or support on-stage judging decisions. This is a full-time production position, hired and paid through Entertainment Partners.

Key Responsibilities

  • Write an average of eight original categories per week, formatted to the show’s answer-and-question structure across Jeopardy! and Double Jeopardy! rounds.
  • Source all material to the show’s editorial standards, without reliance on Wikipedia or AI-generated content.
  • Bring prepared, constructive notes to writers’ meetings on game material in active development.
  • Rewrite clues in response to feedback from the research staff, turning notes around quickly within the production cycle.
  • Draft test material as needed to support contestant evaluation and game show development processes.
  • Provide rapid-response research during tape days to assist with real-time judging calls made on stage.

What You Bring

  • A four-year college degree and exceptional grammar, writing, and communication skills are required.
  • Demonstrated ability to work closely with research, production, and editorial teams across a television production workflow.
  • WGA membership is preferred, given the guild-covered nature of the writing staff.
  • Familiarity with FileMaker Pro is a plus in this role.
  • Broad knowledge across history, science, literature, geography, arts, and popular culture, with the ability to write clues that are precise, verifiable, and engaging.

Why This Role

Jeopardy! is one of the few television productions where a writer’s work reaches a national broadcast audience five days a week, and the writing staff has the Emmy track record to show for it. Sony Pictures Entertainment offers an anticipated base salary of $138,000 to $172,000 for this position, with potential annual incentive and comprehensive benefits depending on qualifications and experience. For a staff writer with a research background and a serious interest in game show production, this is a rare full-time opening on one of the most recognized formats in American television.

Apply now for the Writer position at Sony Pictures Entertainment and put your category writing in front of one of the most competitive editorial rooms in television.
