This role sits within the real-time VFX pipeline, responsible for designing and integrating environmental and gameplay effects directly into the game engine. About the Role
The VFX Artist joins a team at Ubisoft Montreal working across one of the most recognized open-world game franchises in production today. Day-to-day work centers on building particle systems, sourcing and creating original textures, and pushing effects through engine integration while keeping real-time performance intact. You’ll work closely with art direction, programming, and design disciplines to make sure every effect reads correctly in context and holds up under optimization.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and produce environmental visual effects including smoke, fire, water, snow, and explosions using particle systems and original texture work.
- Integrate visual effects directly into the game engine and monitor real-time performance throughout the production cycle.
- Work alongside programming teams to evaluate technical requirements and support the development of VFX tools where needed.
- Refine and optimize effects based on playtest feedback, balancing visual fidelity against engine performance constraints.
- Troubleshoot technical issues within the VFX pipeline and resolve conflicts that affect integration or playback quality.
- Incorporate post-launch community feedback into effect adjustments when relevant to ongoing production updates.
What You Bring
- Demonstrated experience creating real-time visual effects for AAA game production or comparable interactive media.
- Proficiency with particle systems and real-time VFX tools within a major game engine such as Unreal or a proprietary equivalent.
- Working knowledge of texture creation workflows as they apply to VFX asset development.
- Ability to design effects that meet technical constraints without sacrificing artistic impact.
- Experience working within a structured VFX pipeline across multiple collaborating departments.
