Cherokee Film Commission is hiring a Film Commissioner based in Oklahoma, representing one of the most active Indigenous-led film and television development entities in the region. The Film Commissioner oversees production development, community storytelling initiatives, and serves as the primary liaison between Cherokee Nation and the broader film and television industry. This role suits a producer or development executive with a background in Native American media, cultural heritage, and episodic or feature film production.

About the Role

The Film Commissioner works within Cherokee Film’s development and production division, supporting projects that center authentic Indigenous narratives across documentary, episodic television, and feature film formats. Day-to-day work involves coordinating with filmmakers, managing production relationships, and guiding content through development pipelines that serve both cultural and commercial goals. The role connects directly to Cherokee Film’s broader mission of building Indigenous storytelling infrastructure in Oklahoma.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for filmmakers and production companies seeking resources, incentives, or partnerships through Cherokee Film Commission.
  • Oversee development of Indigenous-led film and television projects from concept through production, maintaining editorial and cultural integrity throughout the process.
  • Coordinate with finance and development executives on feature film and episodic television slates to align projects with available funding and production timelines.
  • Manage relationships with tribal departments, cultural consultants, and archival resources to support authentic storytelling in documentary and narrative production.
  • Represent Cherokee Film Commission at industry events, film markets, and festivals to advance the organization’s profile in the independent film production community.
  • Support casting and crew outreach efforts that prioritize Native American talent both in front of and behind the camera.

What You Bring

  • Producing credits in documentary, episodic television, or independent feature film production.
  • Experience working within Native American communities or tribal organizations in a media, cultural heritage, or production capacity.
  • Graduate-level education in film, media arts, or a related field is preferred.
  • Familiarity with NAGPRA, tribal consultation processes, or museum and archival work is a genuine asset.
  • Strong working knowledge of independent film development and production workflow from development through delivery.

Why This Role

Cherokee Film Commission is backed by Cherokee Nation Businesses and operates with real infrastructure, including a soundstage, an experienced finance and development executive with American Zoetrope credits, and a track record across documentary television and theatrical feature production. The Film Commissioner position puts you at the center of a growing Indigenous media ecosystem with direct access to tribal resources, national distribution relationships, and a production slate that reaches both OsiyoTV audiences and mainstream theatrical markets. Oklahoma continues to expand as a film production hub, and this role carries meaningful reach within that landscape.
