Job Type
The New York Times is hiring a Senior Video Editor for its Reporter Video team, based out of Los Angeles, CA. This role sits in the post-production workflow of a dedicated news video unit, where the output is short-form vertical video journalism featuring on-camera reporters across news, culture, enterprise, and investigative coverage. It suits an editor with deep roots in digital video storytelling who can own a cut from assembly to delivery without hand-holding.
About the Role
The Reporter Video team functions as a bridge between the newsroom’s reporting talent and its digital platforms, producing editor-led video journalism rather than traditional broadcast packages. Day-to-day, this Senior Video Editor is cutting multiple stories across desks, working directly with reporters, and coordinating with animators to integrate motion graphics into finished pieces. The News and Enterprise focus of this LA-based position means breaking news cycles are part of the regular rhythm, and turnaround expectations are tight.
Key Responsibilities
- Edit and color correct news, culture, and investigative videos featuring on-camera journalists, maintaining consistency with The New York Times visual style across all digital video formats.
- Drive the post-production process on individual projects, including story structure, editorial voice, and creative execution in close collaboration with producers and video journalists.
- Integrate animation and motion graphics from the in-house animation team into finished cuts, working within established house design frameworks.
- Apply strong audio editing and mixing skills to ensure clean, broadcast-quality sound across all digital video deliverables.
- Manage multiple concurrent projects across newsroom desks, applying sound news judgment to prioritize and deliver under deadline pressure without continuous editorial oversight.
- Mentor junior editors on craft, structure, and the specific demands of mobile and vertical video storytelling for news contexts.
What You Bring
- A minimum of 8 years in multimedia storytelling, video editing, and production, with at least 5 years focused specifically on video editing at a major news outlet or production company.
- Expert-level proficiency in Adobe Premiere and the broader Adobe Creative Suite.
- A strong portfolio of digital video journalism, demonstrating command of short-form vertical video formats and breaking news coverage.
- Thorough working knowledge of current events and the editorial judgment to translate ongoing news stories into compelling video formats.
- Proven ability to independently research, structure, and complete a video edit from start to finish.
Why This Role
The New York Times operates one of the most recognized news video operations in digital journalism, with reporter-driven video reaching a substantial paid subscriber base across web and app platforms. This Senior Video Editor position offers direct access to newsroom reporting across nearly every beat, from breaking national news to culture coverage, which is a range most video editing roles at single-topic outlets simply cannot offer. The LA office placement for the News and Enterprise track is a genuine option, not a formality, with real flexibility built into the structure.
Apply now for the Senior Video Editor role at The New York Times and bring your post-production experience to one of the most widely read news video operations in the country.
