Mocap Editor (Mid- Senior Level)

This role sits within ILM’s motion capture pipeline, where the editor is responsible for retargeting, performance refinement, and delivering clean, expressive character motion ready for integration into feature film VFX production. About the Role

The Mocap Editor works inside ILM Mumbai’s motion capture department, contributing to feature film and VFX pipeline projects that demand a high standard of character performance. Day to day, this person is cleaning and refining captured motion data, retargeting across character hierarchies, and solving contact and interaction issues between characters, props, and environments. The role also carries a mentorship component, with the expectation that this editor supports junior team members and helps raise the quality bar across the group.

Key Responsibilities

• Retarget motion data between character hierarchies independently, maintaining performance fidelity across varied rigs.
• Apply non-destructive edits to captured performances to meet sequence requirements without losing the integrity of the original actor’s work.
• Resolve interaction and contact points between characters, props, terrain, and environment with a thorough understanding of human and creature motion.
• Blend body motions with precision, adding finger, toe, tail, and full-body adjustments to strengthen posture, gesture, and physical weight.
• Identify and troubleshoot technical issues within the mocap pipeline, flagging problems early and proposing solutions.
• Mentor junior editors by sharing techniques, reviewing their work, and helping maintain consistent quality standards across the team.

What You Bring

• A degree in Computer Science, Computer Visualisation, or Computer Animation, or equivalent professional experience in a motion capture studio environment.
• Expert-level proficiency in Maya and MotionBuilder, with a proven track record on high-end feature film VFX productions.
• An up-to-date showreel demonstrating motion captured performance work at a professional level.
• Deep knowledge of retargeting techniques and a sharp eye for motion timing, posture, and physical believability.
• Familiarity with Linux and Vicon Shogun Post is a plus.
