Job Position(s): Media Specialist & Videographer
Project Type: Documentary
Job Date: Full Time
Compensation: $65,000 - $75,000/year

The University of Utah is hiring a Media Specialist and Videographer to join its Marketing and Communications team in Salt Lake City, UT. This is an in-house production role focused on originating and finishing branded video content for one of the Mountain West’s largest research universities, covering everything from acquisition through final delivery. It’s a strong fit for a working videographer who owns the full post-production workflow and wants the stability of an institutional production department without leaving craft-level work behind.

About the Role

You’ll be embedded in the University of Utah’s Marketing and Communications video unit, producing a high volume of institutional stories, promotional content, and campus documentary work across the academic year. A typical production day moves between field shoots, where you’re running your own camera, lighting, and sound, and the edit suite, where you’re cutting, color grading, and mixing through to final output. The team operates on a Monday through Friday schedule with periodic evening and weekend shoots, including occasional travel.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate cinema and broadcast cameras on location and on set, with full responsibility for exposure, composition, and framing.
  • Design and execute on-set lighting setups appropriate to the shooting environment, whether interior interview situations or exterior campus shoots.
  • Record and monitor production audio, ensuring clean dialogue and ambient sound for post-production workflow.
  • Edit projects end-to-end in Adobe Premiere, from assembly cut through picture lock, incorporating director and supervisor notes across revision cycles.
  • Perform color grading and sound mix on finished edits, and apply motion graphics using Adobe After Effects where required.
  • Maintain the department’s equipment inventory at UMC House, keeping gear organized, clean, and ready for production at all times.

What You Bring

  • A bachelor’s degree plus six years of directly related videography and editing experience, or a master’s degree plus four years.
  • Fluency in Adobe Premiere as a primary editorial tool, with working knowledge of After Effects for motion graphics.
  • Hands-on experience across the full production chain: camera operation, lighting, field audio, and editorial post-production workflow.
  • A color grading background sufficient to finish projects to broadcast or institutional delivery standards.
  • FAA Part 107 drone certification or active drone piloting experience is a meaningful advantage for this role.

Why This Role

The University of Utah offers a structured benefits package that includes comprehensive health coverage and genuine work-life balance, which is not something every production gig can claim. The Media Specialist and Videographer position comes with a stated salary range of $65,000 to $75,000 annually, and the posting is open through September 30, 2026. For a videographer looking to build a substantial body of institutional documentary and branded content without the project-to-project uncertainty of freelance production, this is a steadier path with real creative output.
