Disney’s ILM is hiring a Lead Mocap Editor to join its motion capture studio team in Mumbai, India. This role sits within the motion capture department at ILM Mumbai, responsible for producing clean, performance-faithful animation data that feeds directly into the VFX pipeline for high-end feature film production. It’s a senior-level position that suits an experienced mocap professional who can work independently on complex retargeting tasks while also guiding junior artists through production.

About the Role

The Lead Mocap Editor works within ILM’s Mumbai studio, contributing to the motion capture post-production workflow on major film VFX projects. Day to day, this person is retargeting performances, blending motion clips, and refining character interaction data to meet the quality bar expected on feature-level work. The role carries a mentorship responsibility, meaning you’re not just hitting your own shots, you’re also helping set the standard for the wider team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Retarget motion capture data between rigs independently, maintaining the integrity of the original performance throughout the process.
  • Refine and adjust actor performances in a non-destructive workflow, improving posture, gesture, weight, and timing without compromising the source material.
  • Address interaction and contact between characters, props, environments, and terrain to produce technically sound and visually believable animation clips.
  • Add finger, toe, tail, and body-level animation enhancements that bring captured performances up to the quality standard required for feature film VFX.
  • Blend distinct motion clips with a strong understanding of transition workflow, producing fluid results that hold up in a full animation pipeline.
  • Mentor junior mocap editors through troubleshooting sessions and technique development, actively raising the quality and consistency of the team’s output.

What You Bring

  • A degree in Computer Science, Computer Visualisation, or Computer Animation, or equivalent professional experience in motion capture post-production.
  • Proven hands-on experience with MotionBuilder, Maya, Blender, and/or Nuance in a production environment working with motion-captured performances.
  • A showreel demonstrating credits on high-end film VFX productions, current enough to reflect your present skill level.
  • Strong knowledge of retargeting and blending techniques as applied in a professional animation studio context.
  • Experience working in a Linux environment, with familiarity with Vicon Shogun Post considered a meaningful advantage.

Why This Role

ILM is one of the most established VFX studios in the industry, with a production slate that spans major franchise films and a Mumbai facility that has grown into a significant part of its global operation. This Lead Mocap Editor position offers access to complex, high-profile feature film production work alongside a team of experienced artists.
