About the Role

This Director position operates within CNN’s broadcast production department, working across daily news programming and special coverage in a 24/7 live television environment. A typical day involves prepping rundowns with editorial staff, identifying production elements like live shots and music, and leading the technical crew from pre-show planning through broadcast.

Key Responsibilities

• Direct live and taped newscasts using traditional crew setups, combo directing, or automated production systems based on program requirements.
• Develop and implement the visual and editorial vision for assigned programs in coordination with editorial leadership and directors across other bureau locations.
• Supervise and provide direction to the full technical crew, communicating show needs clearly before and during broadcast.
• Oversee show design elements including set design, lighting, blocking, graphics, props, music, and sight surveys for remote setups.
• Document and escalate technical issues to management promptly and maintain accurate show and shift reports throughout production.
• Participate in annual performance evaluations for both technical and editorial staff assigned to the program.

What You Bring

• Minimum four years of experience directing in a live news television environment, with strong operational knowledge of all control room positions.
• Three to four years of experience as a technical director in live broadcast production.
• Demonstrated understanding of pre-production and post-production workflow as it applies to live and taped news programming.
• Superior editorial judgment and a genuine, consistent consumption of news and video content across multiple formats and platforms.
• Four-year degree from an accredited university in journalism, communications, or a related field, or equivalent demonstrated experience in episodic or live television production.
