Netflix is hiring a Crowds Supervisor for its Animation Studios in Sydney, Australia. This role sits within the character effects and simulation pipeline, responsible for leading crowds work across a feature film from initial briefs through to final compositing handoff. It suits an experienced crowds or character effects artist who has stepped into a lead or supervisory capacity on feature animation or high-end VFX productions.

About the Role

The Crowds Supervisor works inside Netflix Animation Studios on a specific feature film, overseeing character crowd simulations, background performances, and large-scale crowd moments across shots and sequences. Day to day, this means running dailies with a team of crowds artists and TDs, aligning with the VFX Supervisor and show leadership on visual and technical standards, and troubleshooting where crowd work intersects with Animation, Layout, Effects, CFX, Lighting, and Compositing. The role sits at the centre of the VFX pipeline, touching nearly every downstream department on the show.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and mentor a team of crowds artists and TDs, assigning shots and sequences and delivering clear, constructive feedback through dailies and departmental reviews.
• Supervise crowds work across the feature film production, ensuring behaviour, scale, and staging serve story clarity, cinematic composition, and tonal consistency.
• Collaborate with the Animation Supervisor to define cycle needs and maintain cycle standards across the show’s crowd library.
• Build or refine hero crowd setups, reference shots, and complex sequences personally, setting the quality bar and technical approach for the broader team.
• Partner with Technical Supervisors, crowds TDs, and pipeline teams to define and improve crowd tools, workflows, and asset libraries within the feature animation pipeline.
• Provide production management with accurate reads on crowds complexity, progress, and scheduling risk to support realistic prioritisation across the show.

What You Bring

• Significant experience in crowds or character effects for feature animation, VFX, or high-end episodic television, with credits in a lead or supervisory role.
• A strong reel showing high-quality crowd simulations and their integration into complex, multi-element sequences.
• Proficiency in Houdini and working knowledge of Maya, Golaem, or Massive within a production pipeline context.
• A clear understanding of how crowds work interacts with Animation, Layout, Environments, FX, CFX, Lighting, and Compositing departments end to end.
• Strong communication and organisational skills, with a track record of leading artists across a full production cycle.
