This role sits within the characters department and is responsible for leading the creation of hero, secondary, and background character models that move from approved design through to assets ready for rigging, surfacing, CFX, and animation. It suits an experienced character modeler who has moved into leadership and is comfortable owning quality and pipeline standards across a full feature animation production.

About the Role

The Character Modeling Supervisor works inside Netflix Animation Studios on a specific feature film, reporting into the Head of Characters and collaborating closely with the Art Director and show leadership to keep every asset faithful to the director’s vision. Day to day, this means running modeling reviews, managing asset complexity across production stages, and staying tightly connected to rigging, surfacing, and animation to catch technical issues before they compound. It is a hybrid position based in Sydney, with a minimum of three days per week on site.

Key Responsibilities

• Supervise character modeling across all tiers of the asset list, ensuring consistency of proportion, silhouette, and stylistic appeal in line with the show’s visual language.
• Lead modeling reviews and deliver specific, actionable feedback on form, anatomy, topology, and surface quality at each stage of the asset pipeline.
• Work directly with Technical Supervisors and TDs to refine modeling tools, workflows, and asset management processes within the feature animation pipeline.
• Partner with rigging, surfacing, CFX, and animation departments to identify and resolve design or technical conflicts before they affect downstream production.
• Provide production management with accurate reads on asset complexity and progress to support scheduling and prioritization decisions.
• Mentor character modelers on the team, identify skill development needs, and contribute to performance feedback through the production cycle.

What You Bring

• Significant experience as a character modeler in feature animation, VFX, or high-end series production, with time in a lead or supervisory capacity.
• A portfolio that demonstrates strong character modeling across stylized and realistic work, with clear command of anatomy, form, and appeal.
• Working proficiency in Maya and ZBrush, with additional modeling or sculpting tools considered a plus.
• Solid understanding of how character assets interact with rigging, surfacing, CFX, and animation within a structured production pipeline.
• Clear communication skills and the ability to give direct, constructive feedback across departments and seniority levels.
