Camera Operator & Editor

RNZ is hiring a Camera Operator and Editor based in Wellington, NZ, to join their digital content team. This role sits within RNZ’s visual journalism operation, producing and editing news, lifestyle, social media, and music content for the organisation’s digital broadcast platforms. It suits a working camera operator with broadcast news credits who is equally comfortable in the edit suite as they are on a shoot.

About the Role

The Camera Operator and Editor works across RNZ’s digital publishing workflow, contributing original video and stills to the platform while also evaluating and preparing content sourced from outside providers. A typical day moves between shooting in the field and sitting in post-production workflow, cutting sequences in Premiere Pro for same-day digital publication. RNZ is recruiting for both a fixed term full time position and a casual role, both based in Wellington, with travel required at short notice.

Key Responsibilities

• Direct, shoot, and edit broadcast-quality video and still images for RNZ’s digital platforms across news, lifestyle, social, and music formats.
• Evaluate and prepare video and photography supplied by outside providers, ensuring material meets broadcast standards before publication.
• Maintain accurate and current video and stills archives, managing image rights and metadata in line with production standards.
• Apply appropriate visual storytelling techniques across a range of content types, from breaking news packages to longer-form feature edits.
• Collaborate with journalists and producers to translate editorial stories into strong visual treatments suited to digital distribution.
• Contribute to RNZ’s social media presence through an active understanding of platform-specific content formats and audience behaviour.

What You Bring

• A proven track record shooting and editing video and stills to a professional broadcast standard, with credits in a live news environment.
• Hands-on experience with Adobe Premiere Pro, Lightroom, and Photoshop. After Effects experience is a recognised advantage.
• Comfort working across news, features, social content, and music shoots without needing a gear change in mindset between them.
• Strong organisational discipline around archiving, image management, and rights clearance in a high-volume digital production context.
• Confidence to travel at short notice and deliver quality work under deadline pressure.
