Department Description: Dedicated to fostering creativity in the next generation of storytellers, Austin Film Festival established its comprehensive art-education program within its inaugural year. Now known as the Young Filmmakers Program, AFF provides a year-round exploration of creativity, collaboration, and storytelling to Texas students ages 9 to 18. The Program consists of four key initiatives: the Young Filmmakers Competition, its Annual Summer Film Camp, the Festival and Conference Scholarship Program, and its signature, in-school, Digital Storytelling program, which provides English and Language Arts, TEKS-aligned curriculum on the arts of screenwriting, narrative podcasting, and film production. At Austin Film Festival, we believe all students have an important story to tell. We are committed to providing the tools and educational resources in order to support, encourage, and inspire Texas’s next generation of storytellers.
Job Description: Interns work with the Director of the Young Filmmakers Program, Summer Film Camp Coordinator, and instructors during the Annual Summer Film Camp. Summer Film Camp Interns will assist with all aspects of production of camper’s films and will supervise the student film crews in the capacity of on-set producer.
Job Responsibilities:
– Assisting the Summer Camp Coordinator with daily tasks
– Assisting with instruction in areas such as: screenwriting, production, and post-production
– Serving as on-set producer for our students’ films
– Communicating with parents
– Sign In/Sign Out procedures
– Pick Up/Drop Off Procedures
Project Ownership Opportunities: Approximately a month into each internship, interns will be assigned one of the following projects (based upon interns’ capabilities and goals) to own throughout the rest of the internship’s duration.
1. Equipment and SD Cards:
– Ensure all equipment for respective camps is organized and ready for each day
– Download all SD Card data onto the computer at the end of each day
– Wipe media from devices after it has been downloaded
– First point of contact for any equipment issues
– Responsible for plugging in all batteries at the end of each day to use in the next class
2. Final Film Uploads:
– Ensure all of the final films are uploaded into drop box and in the respective folders on the hard drive
– Start the initial Premiere Pro file for the SFC Showcase to include film, week, and camper names on each title card.
Interns will get the opportunity to:
– Cultivate a productive, collaborative, and fun learning environment
– Ability to work and collaborate with teams at various levels of communication
– Effectively communicate complex topics to students
– Teaching and classroom facilitation experience
Qualifications: Interns should have experience working with students, bonus points if it was in some sort of mentorship or teaching role. At Summer Film Camp we emphasize a creative and collaborative environment, and we look for these qualities in our interns as well. Additionally, all Summer Film Camp Interns should have knowledge of basic filmmaking equipment, and experience with Adobe Premiere is a must. Additional qualifications include:
– Film production experience
– Knowledge of Premiere Pro editing software, cameras, and other multimedia equipment
– Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
– Ability to prioritize constant changes and multitask
– Maintain high standards of professionalism
– Previous experience with children is preferred
Timeframe: May – August. Hours are Flexible leading up to camp; M-F 8AM-6PM during camp. Interns will need to commit to working 40 hours for at least one week of camp.
