Project Type: TV Series
Job Date: Full Time
Compensation: Paid - Salary

Disney Television Animation is hiring an Assistant Director to join their studio in Glendale, CA. This role sits at the center of the storyboard and animatic pipeline, working directly with series Directors, Line Producers, and Creative Executives to move episodes from handout through final shipment to the overseas studio. It suits an experienced Storyboard Artist who is ready to step into creative leadership on an animated television series.

About the Role

Disney Television Animation has been producing kids and family content for over forty years, across formats including traditional 2D, rig-based 2D, CG preschool, CG premium, and stop-motion. The Assistant Director role sits within the story department and touches every stage of the episodic television production cycle, from storyboard supervision to animatic editorial to shipment prep. On any given day, this person is checking in with board artists, flagging creative or budget concerns to the Line Producer, and making sure the episode is locked and cleared before it leaves the building.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise Storyboard Artists and Revisionists on assigned episodes, working in direct partnership with the episode Director throughout the boarding process.
  • Storyboard and execute revisions on high-complexity episodes when called upon by the Director or Executive Producer.
  • Attend handout meetings fully prepared, then follow up with the Director and board artists to confirm everyone is aligned on direction, complexity, and schedule.
  • Collaborate with the Director and Editor to build the animatic, then carry it through Board-o-matic, Animatic, and Final Lock stages for shipment.
  • Review and correct all materials before delivery to the overseas animation studio, coordinating with the Timing Director and Continuity Coordinator to confirm final approvals are in place.
  • Partner with the Director to ensure that Executive, Legal, and Standards and Practices notes are addressed across the full production pipeline.

What You Bring

  • A minimum of five years working in Story or Animation departments on animated television series or comparable production types.
  • Hands-on storyboarding ability, including Sheet Timing, with experience across traditional animation and CG animation production.
  • Proficiency with Cintiq hardware and software including Toon Boom Storyboard Pro and Photoshop.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage artists, hold a schedule, and communicate production issues clearly to creative and production leadership.
  • Familiarity with the full episodic animation pipeline from creative handout through overseas shipment.

Why This Role

Disney Television Animation is one of the few animation studios with an active slate spanning multiple formats and audience tiers simultaneously, which means real variety in the productions an Assistant Director can work across. The studio has a track record of developing creative leadership from within, and this posting remains open for consideration through December 31, 2026, giving qualified candidates a genuine runway to be matched to the right production.
