About the Role

The Associate Technical Supervisor (Back-End) sits at the intersection of creative and technical leadership on an animated feature film, working directly with the Technical Supervisor and Solutions Engineering to keep the back-end pipeline running at the quality the production requires. Day-to-day work includes troubleshooting rendering and compositing workflows, validating new tools before they reach artists, and coordinating with TDs across lighting, FX, and final output to resolve issues before they hit the schedule. This is a production-facing role, not a pure R&D position, so the balance between hands-on support and longer-term pipeline development is a real part of the job.

Key Responsibilities

• Oversee the technical pipeline for lighting, rendering, compositing, imaging, simulation and FX, and final delivery on an animated feature film production.
• Troubleshoot and optimize VFX pipeline workflows, developing practical solutions through existing tools or new tool builds as production demands shift.
• Test and validate pipeline changes before artist deployment, tracking and resolving issues in coordination with Solutions Engineering and R&D.
• Provide day-to-day technical oversight and mentorship to TDs across back-end departments, supporting onboarding and ongoing skill development.
• Track development initiatives, manage estimates and scope, and adjust plans to keep technical work aligned with production deadlines.
• Partner with the Technical Supervisor and Solutions Engineering Manager to prepare estimates and plans for show-specific technical work, and coordinate cross-departmental testing to accelerate high-priority fixes.

What You Bring

• Demonstrated experience as a TD or technical lead on animated feature film or high-end animation studio productions, with clear credits in back-end departments.
• Deep working knowledge of lighting, rendering, compositing, and final output workflows within a feature animation pipeline.
• Experience supporting or building production pipeline tools, with the ability to diagnose and resolve technical issues across integrated systems.
• A track record of mentoring TDs and managing technical team workloads in a production environment.
• Strong communication skills when translating technical constraints and solutions for both artists and production leadership.
