Project Type: Video Game
Job Date: Full Time
Compensation: Paid - Salary

Nex is hiring a VFX Artist to join its Hong Kong-based team, working on interactive motion gaming experiences built in Unity. This role sits within the art and design department, responsible for building the real-time visual effects systems that make player actions feel physical, readable, and rewarding across a growing library of motion games. It suits a technical artist with a background in game production VFX who thinks equally in terms of visual craft and rendering performance.

About the Role

You’ll be embedded in the art and engineering pipeline at Nex, working across a slate of original and licensed game experiences that include collaborations with major entertainment brands. Day to day, that means building and iterating on particle systems, shaders, and real-time VFX inside Unity, then optimizing those assets to run cleanly across hardware. The work connects directly to game feel, so your output shapes how players physically experience every hit, dash, and interaction.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build and implement real-time visual effects including impact feedback, environmental reactions, and character-specific FX using Unity VFX Graph, Particle System, and Shader Graph.
  • Develop custom shaders and scripted tools in C# to streamline asset integration and improve the overall VFX pipeline for the art team.
  • Work directly with designers to refine game feel, ensuring player motion feedback is readable, satisfying, and consistent across experiences.
  • Optimize effects for performance through profiling, draw call reduction, LOD implementation, and shader optimization without sacrificing visual quality.
  • Partner with environment and character artists to extend visual storytelling through lighting, dynamic world elements, and character-level shader work.
  • Diagnose and resolve rendering, material, and lighting issues, proposing technical solutions that keep production moving.

What You Bring

  • Proven credits as a VFX Artist or Technical Artist on Unity-based game productions, with shipped titles in your portfolio.
  • Hands-on proficiency with Unity VFX Graph, Particle System, and Shader Graph, plus experience writing custom shaders.
  • Working knowledge of C# scripting as it applies to visual systems and artist-facing tooling.
  • Demonstrated experience with real-time rendering optimization techniques including profiling, LOD, and draw call reduction.
  • Strong understanding of timing, visual rhythm, and motion as they relate to interactive feedback in game production.

Why This Role

Nex has earned recognition from Fast Company, TIME, and multiple international design awards for its approach to motion gaming, and its content partnerships with Hasbro, Sesame Workshop, and NBCUniversal put this work in front of a wide family audience. The VFX Artist role reports to the Senior Director of Design, placing you close to creative decision-making rather than at the end of a long approval chain. For a technical artist who wants ownership over a real-time VFX pipeline from the ground up, this is a rare position.

Apply now for the VFX Artist role at Nex and bring your real-time effects work to an interactive game production pipeline with genuine reach.
