DNEG
DNEG Animation is hiring an Environment Modeller for their studio in Montréal, Quebec, with a hybrid remote arrangement available. This role sits within the modelling department and is responsible for building the detailed 3D environments, sets, and props that populate animated feature films from concept designs through to production-ready assets. It suits a modeller with hands-on experience across multiple animation production styles who knows how to work efficiently within a structured VFX pipeline.
About the Role
The Environment Modeller at DNEG works directly with the production design team and layout department to translate 2D concept art into clean, optimized 3D builds that hold up across a full animated feature film. DNEG Animation’s production slate includes titles like The Garfield Movie, Entergalactic, and Nimona, so each project brings a distinct visual language and different modelling demands. Day to day, this means interpreting reference material, building modular asset libraries, and submitting work through regular review cycles with the modelling supervisor.
Key Responsibilities
- Build unique and detailed CG environment models using production-provided reference material, ensuring accuracy to the approved production design.
- Apply modular modelling approaches to construct sets and environment assets that are efficient to rig, shade, and render downstream.
- Maintain clean topology and efficient geometry across all assets, with a clear understanding of how modelling decisions affect rigging, FX, and lighting departments.
- Submit work to and participate in scheduled dailies and project-specific review sessions with the modelling lead and supervisor.
- Learn and operate within DNEG’s proprietary modelling pipeline tools and department workflows as part of onboarding and ongoing production.
- Model across a range of environment types including architecture, vehicles, vegetation, urban sets, and natural landscapes depending on the needs of the current production.
What You Bring
- Production credits as an environment modeller on animated feature film projects, across more than one visual style.
- Solid working knowledge of both organic and hard-surface modelling techniques, including props and architectural environments.
- Familiarity with modular asset construction methods and how they support scalable animation studio production workflows.
- Strong ability to read and work from design reference, and to communicate technical and artistic feedback with leads and peers.
- Experience working to modelling briefs set by a production designer in a department-integrated feature film production environment.
Why This Role
DNEG Animation has a track record of delivering stylistically varied animated features at a high level of craft, and this Montréal studio draws on that reputation to attract complex, ambitious projects. Working here as an Environment Modeller means rotating through productions with genuinely different visual demands rather than repeating the same look across every show. The hybrid remote setup also gives Montreal-based modellers real flexibility without sacrificing access to the team.
Apply now for the Environment Modeller position at DNEG Animation and bring your environment modelling experience to a studio building some of animation’s most distinctive worlds.
