Job Date: Full Time
Compensation: $75/hr

Sony Pictures Animation is hiring a Compositor for an upcoming animated series, based out of Los Angeles, California. This role sits within the compositing department and is responsible for integrating rendered elements into finished shots, running comp tests for characters and environments, and maintaining visual consistency across sequences. It’s a strong fit for a compositor with experience in episodic animation who is comfortable working within a supervised pipeline alongside a partner studio.

About the Role

The Compositor works directly under the Compositing Supervisor on an animated series production, handling both internal shot work and review of material coming in through a partner studio relationship. Day-to-day work involves multi-AOV compositing in Nuke, participating in LRC dailies, completing retakes, and contributing paint-overs and directional notes as needed. This is a union-covered position, operating within a structured VFX pipeline on a large-scale animation project.

Key Responsibilities

  • Composite shots in Nuke under the direction of the Compositing Supervisor, maintaining visual consistency across sequences and environments throughout the series.
  • Run comp tests for characters and environments to establish and validate the look before wider production rollout.
  • Review LRC dailies from the partner studio alongside the Compositing Supervisor and contribute notes that provide clear creative direction.
  • Assist with paint-overs as needed to communicate feedback and support the partner studio’s work on the production.
  • Complete internal retakes and shot polishing tasks, bringing shots to final quality within the post-production workflow.
  • Integrate stock footage plates into 3D environments within Nuke, applying strong color theory and lighting principles to match the established look.

What You Bring

  • Hands-on experience with Nuke in a 3D compositing context, including multi-AOV workflows and integration of live-action plates.
  • A solid working knowledge of lighting principles, color theory, and cinematography as they apply to animation or VFX production.
  • A portfolio that demonstrates compositing work on animated series or comparable episodic television projects.
  • Familiarity with render pipelines and the workflow demands of large-scale animation studio productions.
  • Strong eye for layering, character and environment readability, and shot-level detail across varying sequences.

Why This Role

Sony Pictures Animation has built a reputation for giving artists real creative ownership across both feature animation and animated series, and this role reflects that production culture. The anticipated base salary for this position is $62.22/hr to $75/hr, with benefits pursuant to the applicable collective bargaining agreement. For a compositor looking to work at a studio that takes the craft seriously, this is a substantive credit on a meaningful production.
