Job Position(s): Vertical Video Editor, Opinion
Project Type: Film & Television
Job Date: Full Time
Compensation: Paid - Salary

The New York Times is hiring a Vertical Video Editor for its Opinion section, based in New York, NY. This role sits within the Opinion Video team and focuses entirely on producing, writing, and editing short form vertical video content for nytimes.com, TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram. It is best suited to a journalist-adjacent editor who is equally comfortable in a post-production workflow as they are on camera or rewriting a script.

About the Role

The Opinion Video team operates at the intersection of editorial journalism and mobile-first video storytelling, and this editor is expected to carry projects from concept through publish. Day to day, that means adapting print journalism into scripted vertical video formats, pulling archive footage, building graphics in After Effects, and posting finished cuts across social platforms on tight deadlines. This is not a pure post role, the right person is expected to contribute ideas, write copy, and occasionally host.

Key Responsibilities

  • Produce, write, and edit vertical video packages for nytimes.com and social platforms including TikTok and YouTube, often working from existing print journalism.
  • Perform archive producing duties, sourcing and clearing photo, video, audio, and graphics assets to support each piece.
  • Write SEO-driven captions and on-screen copy that translates Opinion journalism for off-platform audiences unfamiliar with The New York Times coverage.
  • Appear on camera as a video host when the editorial approach calls for a direct-to-audience format.
  • Work directly with print journalists and editors to script and shape stories for a vertical video post-production pipeline on a regular publishing cadence.
  • Monitor platform trends across TikTok and Instagram to inform new mobile video formats developed in collaboration with the audience team.

What You Bring

  • At least four years of hands-on creative video editing experience, with a strong short form vertical video production reel.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Premiere and After Effects at a production-ready level.
  • Demonstrated experience working in a newsroom or comparable editorial environment with daily publishing deadlines.
  • Comfort in front of the camera in an on-camera host capacity.
  • Deep working knowledge of TikTok and Instagram as distribution platforms, not just as a viewer.
  • This position is represented by the NewsGuild of New York.

Why This Role

The New York Times Opinion section carries real editorial weight, and the video team is actively building out its vertical video presence rather than maintaining an existing one, which means there is genuine room to shape formats and workflows from the ground up. The role comes with full benefits including medical, dental, and vision coverage, a company-matching 401(k), paid parental leave, and tuition reimbursement, and includes eligibility for variable pay such as an annual bonus and restricted stock. For a video editor looking to do meaningful journalism-driven work within a structured mobile video production environment, this is a substantive staff position at a major media organization.

Apply now for the Vertical Video Editor role with The New York Times and bring your short form editorial video experience to one of the most read opinion platforms in the country.
