This role sits within the Production Tools Engineering team, building and maintaining web applications and cloud-based tools used daily by Production Management staff across Netflix Animation Studios’ three-facility operation. It’s a strong fit for a software engineer who understands animation or VFX production workflows and wants to work closer to the creative pipeline than a typical product company allows.

About the Role

The Production Tools Engineering team operates at the intersection of technology and studio operations, supporting the animated feature film slate being produced across Vancouver, Burbank, and Sydney. This developer will spend their time building React-based UIs, integrating with Flow Production Tracking (ShotGrid), and partnering directly with Production users to translate real workflows into working tools. The role carries genuine product ownership, meaning you’re not just shipping tickets but shaping how the tools actually work.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, implement, and maintain web applications with multiple features and external service dependencies within the animation studio pipeline.
• Build and support integrations with Flow Production Tracking, including embedded web views and action menu items used by production staff.
• Partner with Production Management personnel to gather workflow requirements and translate them into front-end technical solutions.
• Write and maintain TypeScript code within a modern stack using React, Vite, Apollo Client, and npm.
• Identify systemic improvements to existing tools and workflows, not just respond to incoming requests.
• Represent the engineering team in production-facing meetings, presenting solutions and gathering feedback directly from studio users.

What You Bring

• Five or more years of experience as a front-end engineer, with work history in animation, VFX, or games production environments strongly preferred.
• Hands-on experience with Flow Production Tracking (ShotGrid), including embedded app development or AMI implementation.
• Proficiency in TypeScript, React, Vite, node, and npm, with the ability to read code across multiple languages.
• Experience working with GraphQL service APIs, ideally via Apollo Client.
• Familiarity with Vue.js, Java, Python, or desktop UI frameworks such as PyQt is a genuine bonus here.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills for direct engagement with non-technical production staff.
