Job Position(s): Digital Matte Painter
Project Type: Feature Film
Job Date: Full Time
Compensation: Paid - Salary

Framestore is hiring a Digital Matte Painter for a six-month contract based in Melbourne, Australia, or working within a compatible timezone. This role sits within Framestore’s Film and Episodic VFX pipeline, where the artist is responsible for producing photo-real painted environments, textures, and elements that integrate with live action plates or stand alone as full DMP shots. It suits a working matte painter with solid experience in feature film production or high-end episodic television who understands how DMP output feeds into a broader compositing and 3D workflow.

About the Role

Digital Matte Painters at Framestore work across the full VFX pipeline, coordinating closely with Modeling, Shading, Lighting, and Compositing departments to deliver shots that meet both creative and technical briefs. Day to day, this means building photo-realistic environments from photographic reference, mapping painted assets onto 3D geometry, and iterating with VFX Supervisors to align plates with approved concept design. The work spans both traditional DMP techniques and projection-based 3D methods, depending on the needs of each sequence.

Key Responsibilities

  • Create photo-realistic digital matte paintings for integration into live action plates and use within 3D environments mapped onto geometry.
  • Develop and refine the visual look of shots and sequences in direct consultation with the VFX Supervision team.
  • Work alongside production to establish shot schedules and technical delivery requirements throughout the post-production workflow.
  • Partner with Shader Developers, Lighting TDs, and Compositors to ensure final frames meet the studio’s delivery standards.
  • Source and build personal photographic reference libraries to support accurate material and lighting representation across environments.
  • Share techniques, reference, and pipeline knowledge with other matte painters and contribute to the team’s collective craft development.

What You Bring

  • Demonstrable experience as a Digital Matte Painter on feature film production or high-end episodic television projects.
  • Strong understanding of real-world lighting, surface materials, and photographic principles as they apply to DMP work.
  • Working knowledge of Modeling and Shading department practices, including how painted assets are integrated into a 3D pipeline.
  • Proficiency with industry-standard DMP and compositing software used in VFX post-production workflows.
  • Work rights in Australia, or availability within a timezone that aligns closely with Melbourne.

Why This Role

Framestore is a multi-Oscar-winning studio with a long track record on major feature film productions, working directly with directors and producers from early creative development through final delivery. This contract offers a Digital Matte Painter direct access to that level of production, with supervision from artists operating at the top of the VFX industry. The six-month contract length gives meaningful runway to build credits and pipeline experience within one of the more respected film VFX studios working today.

Apply now for the Digital Matte Painter role at Framestore and put your work in front of the team building some of the most technically demanding visual effects in cinema.
