Vancouver Actors Guide is casting actors for Smoke Gets in Your House, a readers theatre production based in Vancouver, BC. This is a volunteer stage performance project where cast members perform scripted material without memorization, delivering character-driven readings that bring the play to life for a live audience. The role suits theatre performers who excel at vocal performance and interpretive acting within a structured readers theatre format.

About the Role

Smoke Gets in Your House is produced through Naked Stage Productions Society, a readers theatre company that presents live performance work in the Vancouver area. Cast members rehearse on a weekly Tuesday schedule and perform in scheduled shows, with the rehearsal process itself being featured as part of the White Rock and South Surrey Arts Crawl on October 3 and 4. A typical week involves attending rehearsal with script in hand, developing character through vocal interpretation rather than blocking or line memorization.

Key Responsibilities

  • Attend all scheduled rehearsals and performances as required by the production calendar for Smoke Gets in Your House.
  • Perform assigned roles using readers theatre technique, where vocal delivery and emotional presence carry the full weight of the character.
  • Participate in the Arts Crawl showcase dates on October 3 and 4, where the rehearsal process will be presented to a public audience for several hours each day.
  • Prepare audition sides in advance of the fifteen-minute scheduled audition appointment.
  • Maintain membership in Naked Stage Productions Society throughout the production run, joining the society if not already a member.
  • Collaborate with the director and fellow cast members to serve the material without movement-based staging or set-piece interaction.

What You Bring

  • Demonstrated stage acting experience with strong vocal performance skills suited to live theatre production.
  • Ability to convey character depth and emotional range without physical blocking, which is the technical core of readers theatre performance.
  • Availability for all rehearsal Tuesdays and performance dates, with one Tuesday dropped due to the Arts Crawl schedule.
  • A recent headshot and acting resume ready to submit at the time of audition scheduling, with the deadline to book a slot being September 24th.

Why This Role

Smoke Gets in Your House offers Vancouver-based performers a chance to work within a dedicated readers theatre company with an established production society and a public-facing showcase at a regional arts festival. This is a volunteer project, and the value is in the live performance credit, the rehearsal process exposure at the Arts Crawl, and the experience of working within a focused ensemble. Vancouver Actors Guide serves as the community resource connecting local performers to exactly this type of grassroots stage work.
