About the Role

The Senior Layout Artist works directly with the Layout Supervisor to align cinematographic choices with the director’s vision across a featurette production. Day-to-day work involves interpreting storyboards and animatics into 3D scenes, animating cameras and character blocking for story beats, and flagging staging or technical issues before they reach downstream departments. This is a hybrid role requiring in-studio time alongside the flexibility to work remotely within a structured production schedule.

Key Responsibilities

• Establish camera positioning, lens choice, and staging for scenes within the CG animation pipeline, ensuring each shot serves the emotional and narrative intent of the sequence.
• Translate 2D storyboards, animatics, and director pitches into 3D layouts, pitching alternative staging solutions when the source material requires interpretation.
• Maintain continuity of screen direction, eyelines, character geography, and spatial relationships across sequences to support editorial flow.
• Identify storytelling, staging, and technical issues early in production and propose practical solutions before they affect downstream departments.
• Serve as a knowledge resource for Layout Artists on the team, sharing pipeline techniques, cinematography best practices, and shot-solving approaches during dailies and rounds.
• Manage individual shot workloads in coordination with production to meet schedule, communicating progress and blockers clearly to the team.

What You Bring

• Previous production experience as a Senior Layout Artist, or equivalent, on featurette or feature-length animation projects.
• Strong working knowledge of 3D space, camera transforms, scene organization, and CG animation pipeline workflows.
• Applied understanding of cinematography principles including focal length, depth of field, composition, camera motivation, and pacing.
• Experience with editing software used in layout and animatic review contexts.
• A portfolio demonstrating motivated camera movement, dynamic framing, and the ability to make independent staging decisions across varied sequence types.
