Layout Artist

Rodeo FX is hiring a Layout Artist for their Montreal, Canada studio. This role sits within the 3D pipeline, responsible for translating previs and supervisor directives into structured, camera-defined scene setups that animation, environment, and matchmove teams build from. It suits a technically grounded artist who understands both the spatial logic of a shot and the visual storytelling decisions that drive it.

About the Role

The Layout Artist works upstream in the VFX pipeline, setting the foundation for shots and sequences before animation and environment teams take over. Day to day, that means working in Maya to structure scenes, position cameras with directing intent in mind, and deliver clean, organized setups that hold up across departments. You will be reviewing real-world capture data like LiDAR and photogrammetry, attending dailies, and keeping production informed when technical issues surface.

Key Responsibilities

• Interpret previs footage and supervisor notes to build scene structure and camera setups in Maya that reflect the shot’s directing intent and technical constraints.
• Refine shot composition and camera movement to support the pacing, emotion, and readability of each sequence within the overall VFX pipeline.
• Identify and resolve blocking issues or technical inconsistencies at the layout stage before they carry downstream.
• Incorporate real-world capture data, including LiDAR and photogrammetry, into scene preparation to ensure accurate spatial grounding.
• Maintain scene cleanliness, organization, and adherence to studio naming conventions and technical standards across all delivered assets.
• Participate in dailies and interdepartmental reviews, presenting work clearly and integrating feedback from animation, environment, and supervision teams.

What You Bring

• Demonstrated experience as a Layout Artist or in a closely related 3D generalist role within feature film or episodic television production.
• Strong working knowledge of Maya, including camera rigging, scene organization, and pipeline-ready file management.
• Familiarity with previs workflows and the ability to read and translate director and supervisor intent into coherent 3D setups.
• Comfort working with photogrammetry and LiDAR data in a production context.
• A track record of meeting deadlines within a structured VFX pipeline environment.
