Job Position(s): Junior Camera Operator - TV & Broadcasts
Project Type: Film & Television
Job Date: Full Time
Compensation: Paid - Salary

Whisper is hiring a Junior Camera Operator for a 12-month paid placement based in Cardiff, Wales. This role sits within the camera department across live broadcast and studio television production, supporting camera operators on multicamera setups and contributing to equipment management between shoots. It suits someone early in their camera career who wants structured on-the-job experience in broadcast television rather than a short-term work experience placement.

About the Role

This placement is embedded within Whisper’s camera team, working across live sports broadcasts and studio productions throughout the 12 months. Day-to-day, the Junior Camera Operator will move between prep, rigging, and operational support on live television shoots, getting hands-on time with broadcast camera systems under the guidance of experienced operators. The role starts as soon as possible, giving the right candidate an immediate entry point into professional broadcast production workflow.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assisting the camera team during multicamera live broadcast setups, including cable management and camera positioning ahead of transmission.
  • Supporting equipment checks, lens prep, and kit transportation to ensure the camera department is ready for each production day.
  • Operating cameras under supervision on studio productions, building toward independent operation across broadcast formats.
  • Learning and maintaining familiarity with broadcast camera systems used across live sports television coverage.
  • Working alongside the camera crew during studio recording days, following floor manager cues and camera scripts accurately.
  • Helping with post-shoot equipment wrap, inventory logging, and safe storage of broadcast camera kit.

What You Bring

  • Some prior experience with broadcast or studio cameras, whether through education, short courses, or entry-level production work.
  • A working understanding of multicamera television production and how live broadcast differs from single-camera shoots.
  • Genuine interest in sports television, as a significant portion of Whisper’s output sits within that genre.
  • Physical readiness for long shoot days involving equipment handling, rigging, and time on your feet on location and in studio.
  • Reliability and an ability to take direction clearly in a live broadcast environment where timing is critical.

Why This Role

Whisper is a Cardiff-based production company with a strong track record in sports and live television, giving this placement genuine broadcast credits rather than background filler work. A 12-month paid placement at this level is relatively rare in broadcast camera, and the access to live sports production is a direct route into one of the more competitive camera disciplines in television. This is a structured way into the industry for someone who wants real broadcast experience on their CV.
