Sony Pictures Imageworks is hiring an Experienced FX Artist for their studio in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. This role sits within the FX department and is responsible for designing, creating, and animating digital effects elements across feature film production, from fire and smoke to water, dust, and fluid simulations. It’s a strong fit for a Houdini-proficient effects artist who has feature film credits and is comfortable working within a structured VFX pipeline.

About the Role

The Experienced FX Artist works inside a production-driven FX department, building and refining effects that serve the look and storytelling needs of each show. Day-to-day work involves developing simulations, building effects pipelines and tools, and iterating through dailies based on notes from FX supervisors and production. This is a project-based, full-time position with output reviewed regularly against productivity and quota targets tied to show deadlines.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and animate digital effects elements including natural phenomena such as fire, smoke, water, lava, dust, and bubbles to support the visual world of each production.
  • Develop FX pipelines, tools, and techniques that meet both the technical and art direction requirements of the show.
  • Participate in dailies, rounds, and team reviews, presenting work in progress and responding to feedback from supervisors and production.
  • Receive and interpret shot turnovers, briefings, and notes, then execute against them with minimal supervision.
  • Problem-solve with peers and production to find solutions that balance visual quality with the realities of the production schedule.
  • Work independently or as part of a larger FX team depending on shot complexity and show needs.

What You Bring

  • Comprehensive knowledge of Houdini and the simulation techniques used to create effects across a range of complexity levels.
  • General working knowledge of VEX, shading, lighting, and rendering as they apply to the FX workflow.
  • Prior credits on feature films or equivalent experience working within a professional VFX pipeline.
  • Familiarity with Linux-based operating systems and the command-line environments common to animation studio infrastructure.
  • Working knowledge of Katana, Nuke, and Python is considered an asset.

Why This Role

Sony Pictures Imageworks is a well-established visual effects and animation studio with a long track record in feature film production, and this Vancouver facility is an active production hub. The anticipated base salary for this position is $45.34 to $65.10 per hour, with the final offer depending on qualifications, years of experience, education, and certifications. Benefits include healthcare, tuition reimbursement, RRSPs, and sick and vacation leave per company policy.
