Requirements

To celebrate our nation’s 250th birthday, the Walt Whitman Birthplace is seeking three actors to portray Revolutionary War/early 19th century–era figures in an immersive program being performed on weekends from late April through December of 2026. This experience will give visitors the chance to step back in time — and you’ll be at the heart of it.

Preferred qualifications include formal training in theater arts or performing arts programs. Experience in dance or musical theater is highly valued. Candidates should demonstrate enthusiasm for storytelling through acting and possess a positive attitude that energizes the team. This paid position offers a vibrant environment where your talent can shine while contributing to inspiring entertainment experiences for diverse audiences.

• You must be available all of the following dates to be considered: April 26, May 16, June 13, July 11, July 12, August 15, September 12, October 11, November 1, December 6

Roles Available:

• A young farmer turned militiaman (looking for actors 18-30)
• Louisa Whitman (Walt’s mother) (50s+)
• An officer in the Continental Army (30-50)

What We’re Looking For:

– Experience memorizing and performing monologues

– Strong improvisational skills

– Comfort engaging directly with audiences of all ages

– Ability to stay in character for extended interactive sessions

– Enthusiasm for history and storytelling

Audition Details:

Auditions to be held on March 27th, 1pm to 3pm and March 28th , 12pm to 2 pm

at the Walt Whitman Birthplace Association,

427 Old Walt Whitman Road, S. Huntington, NY 11746.

You will read from the script and be ready for an improvisation exercise.
