VFX Feature Production Manager

General Summary
The VFX Feature Production Manager is responsible for the VFX department’s asset and shot production schedule, overseeing launch and handover processes between VFX teams, reporting progress and contingency planning, and managing production departmental staff. This position reports to the Head of VFX Production and works with VFX department leadership to generate artist bids, track actuals, strategize asset and scheduling approaches, establish and maintain priorities, collaborate with Practical Shot Production on turnovers, create reports, and manage resources. This role represents the management of the VFX department when working with People and Culture, Recruiting, Finance, and Producers on all relevant matters.
Job Functions
- Supervise the day-to-day operations of the VFX production staff by working closely with creative supervisors in VFX to establish, maintain and revise show bids and staffing plans.
- Supervise and mentor Production Supervisors, Coordinators, and Production Assistants across all VFX disciplines to maintain an accurate schedule, track progress and report delays, support artists and creative leadership, troubleshoot kickbacks, provide coverage, and maintain output targets.
- Work with potential outsource vendors to provide comprehensive turnovers, tracking of actuals and redos, budget management and ensure communication is clear and tasks and deadlines are met.
- Monitor and escalate to Production Technology the tracking, coordination, and resolution of all pipeline issues.
- Partner with CG Supervisors and department leads to ensure adequate launch preparation, review cadence to align aesthetic goals, meaningful work is assigned to artists, and an achievable schedule.
- Strategize and manage the overall VFX schedule and tasks, collaborating with creative supervisors and Production Supervisor to stay on schedule and budget, validate progress, identify issues, provide alternatives to maintain targets and drive solutions.
- Manage tracking of staffing lists, expenses, production quotas and actuals with the production management team; create weekly department reports for Accounting, Head of VFX Production and Producers.
- Manage daily communication across VFX and other studio departments to ensure production priorities, objectives, and changes are properly communicated, understood, and coordinated; make sure Coordinators and Production Supervisors are on top of their communication.
- Partner with Business Operations teams to ensure the management of personnel, software, hardware, and facilities.
- Oversee VFX hiring and act as point of contact for the Recruiting team.
- Act as point of contact for the Post-Production Supervisor and Editorial team regarding all department deliverables.
Qualifications
- 7+ years’ experience in a production management role in feature film VFX with a strong understanding of live action VFX workflows.
- Extensive understanding of all disciplines and processes across CG and VFX production.
- Technical knowledge and understanding of the VFX and/or USD pipelines across multiple departments, a plus.
- General understanding of techniques and methods for stop motion animated films.
- Knowledge of VFX software packages.
- Knowledge of project management software (MS Office).
- Advanced experience with ShotGrid production tracking and asset management database software.
- Demonstrated planning, problem solving, and analytical skills with an organized and methodical approach to work.
- Ability to work both collaboratively and independently.
- Strong attention to detail, communication skills, and work ethic.
- Adaptable and capable of re-prioritizing and multitask according to evolving project goals.
- Demonstrated experience with motivating, mentoring, and leading teams with enthusiasm.
- Calm and personable under pressure and when working toward tight deadlines within a production-driven environment.
