The Ghost Tour Actor/Guide must have a good sense of fun and a desire to entertain while narrating a script of Charleston’s ghoulish past. The person in this position must make our guests feel welcomed and glad they have chosen our company to entertain them.

Requirements:

Essential Functions

  • Present historically accurate information in an entertaining manner in costume, on a moving vehicle on busy streets and outdoors in various weather conditions, several times a work shift, in a loud audible voice with or without amplification to be heard from everywhere in the vehicle.
  • Portray costumes historical characters, either based upon real persons or composites of real persons to entertain and narrate local history from an approved script.
  • Study and rehearse roles from scripts to learn and memorize lines and cues as directed.
  • Lead guests off the tour vehicle on walking sections of the tour while remaining in costume and character, using scripted material to provide storytelling and tour appropriate content in a variety of different locations, including but not limited to burial grounds, cemeteries, historic sites, museums, and memorials.
  • Present the cost of tours and attractions based on the company’s pricing system. Process vouchers and e-tickets with care and make recommendations for additional offerings. Drive sales to meet and exceed your sales goals.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to work independently over long periods of time or as part of a team within the scope of established rules and regulations
  • Ability to read, write and speak fluent English in order to communicate with co-workers and the general public
  • Ability to learn stage direction and memorize historical details provided in a scripted story and relay scripted stories in an entertaining manner.
  • Ability to successfully portray historical characters in front of an audience according to script and stage directions, as well as improvising if the situation arises.
  • Ability to be heard in a loud, audible voice.

Qualifications

  • High school graduate or equivalent preferred
  • Strong interest in Charleston’s history is desirable
  • Prior performance or interpretation experience is strongly preferred

  • Must pass pre-employment background check and substance abuse testing
  • Have a passion for helping people and making their Charleston experience a memorable one.
