Title: STANDARDIZED PATIENT ACTORS

Job Type: ON CAMPUS EMPLOYMENT

Rate of Pay: $20.00 per hour

Description:

A standardized patient (or SP) is an independent contractor hired to portray patients in various medical scenarios. They are used to teach and train aspiring doctors, nurses, students, and other people involved in the medical field how to conduct routine checkups, respond to patient issues, and diagnose symptoms, by interacting with the students in a simulated clinical/patient scenario.

Individuals will be selected based on the availability they provide and the occurrence of Scenario Days. Some instances may require selection based on certain criteria, such as age, gender, or ethnicity. The schedule of scenarios will be communicated via email approximately two weeks in advance. Opportunities will close when schedule requirements are filled.

If selected, a one-hour training session must be completed prior to the Scenario Day under the supervision of an SP Educator. Training sessions are scheduled after the positions for the specific scenario event are filled.

Minimum Qualifications and Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrates ability and willingness to collaborate cooperatively with learners, faculty, and administrators.
  • Demonstrates a lack of bias towards the healthcare system, the learner, and other individuals they encounter.
  • Demonstrates ability to be instructed by an SP Educator.
  • Demonstrates flexibility and reliability with scheduling of assignments.
  • Demonstrates excellent communication skills in English, the ability to use an technology via smartphone, computer, or tablet, to self-report contact info, and respond to calendar invitations in Microsoft Outlook or similar program.
  • Maintain confidentiality of information related to the case, student behavior and feedback
  • Be able to answer questions found on a W-9 form.

Working Conditions:

  • Must be able to move all extremities without difficulty, step up and down from the exam table and change into a gown from clothing if needed.
  • Work will typically occur at Ahlberg Hall on campus at Wichita State University. Travel accommodations will not be provided.
  • Limited to no physical effort required and limited exposure to risk.

Availability:

Individuals will be able to respond to schedule request emails for Standardized Patient Actor activities based on their own availability. Set schedules are not available. Individuals will not have a regular schedule and should not rely on this work as a regular income. Some individuals may have 1-2 opportunities per semester to participate, and some may not be selected to participate. Selection is based on individual demographics and existing health conditions that would contribute to the reality of a medical case for students. When requests for scheduling are sent, the request is sent to more individuals than are needed. So it is important to respond promptly. Shifts are primarily weekday mornings and afternoons between the hours of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. No evening or weekend work will be available.

DISCLAIMER

Sessions may be recorded for faculty grading of students. Videos are confidential and will be deleted after the student finishes the program. Archives are stored on a protected drive accessible only by nursing faculty.
