General Description of the Position:

Production Assistant will also serve as the primary instructor teaching basic: writing, design, acting, and movement/dance classes as needed by using a provided curriculum. Following classes the DSP will also document attendance, activities, and billing on a daily basis.

A Production Assistant should also be prepared to use hand-over-hand techniques to help individuals understanding the best way to use their body or a tool (helping people properly position their feet, arms, hands, head – and so on) in creative movement or dance classes. This does not mean that they will do/are expected to assist with projects for attendees so that they can accomplish a project on their own to the best of their abilities. Production Assistant might be asked to lead a small breakout group on the side, or work one-on-one with an individual with higher support needs. Spontaneity, a sense of play, a sense of humor, creativity, and the ability to rephrase or reframe material presented are a must. Seeing the person, and not the disability, seeing the strengths and not the weaknesses is crucial.

During productions this will include: maintaining the cleanliness of the rehearsal facilities, tracking blocking, costumes, and props for all individuals served by Black Hills Works in rehearsals and ensuring the success of those that we serve during rehearsals and performances. Making connections with, assigning and communicating duties as needed to DSPs present in the rehearsal process. As activities can include sitting down to write, watching short film clips, using painting, crafting, or building supplies in a shop setting, being on the floor to stretch, or repeating beginning level/basic dance movements, the Production Assistant will want to dress in a way that allows them flexibility of movement that doesn’t expose them, while still retaining a professional appearance. Wearing socks, and/or being barefoot is a requirement for acting and dance classes, as well as rehearsals in the Flutter area. As Flutter Productions also interacts with various members of the public, parents, volunteers, larger arts community, and donors in a variety of settings a business casual dress is required for the position, wearing athletic or building/shop clothes only when needed.
