Job Summary:

Position Summary

We are looking for a Creature Technical Director who reflects the innovative spirit, collaborative mindset and passion for great filmmaking that define ILM

The Creature TD will be responsible for rigging and enveloping hero to background creatures, vehicles and props. Able to wrangle rigging and creature pipeline issues proficiently under the direction and guidance of their Leads and Supervisors

Ability to run flesh-surface, hair, rigid sim, crowd, and/or cloth simulations

  • Simulating shots or sequences

  • Creating simulation setups for cloth, hair and muscle

  • Creating and maintaining animation rigs

  • Collaborating with the rest of the department, R&D and pipeline in pioneering new workflow

  • Documenting and mentoring the department’s artists on these workflows

  • Debugging and troubleshooting rigs and simulations

What We’re Looking For

  • Experience working on high-end VFX or animated feature film productions

  • Ability to communicate cross-discipline and provide innovative solutions to pipeline issues

  • Ability to work under pressure and to strict deadlines whilst maintaining a high-quality output

  • Strong knowledge of Houdini and proficient in VEX and python

  • Strong understanding of Houdini input/output pipeline

  • Demonstrable experience in creating complex character simulation setups in Houdini

  • Strong understanding of VFX asset/creature pipelines

  • Experience with cloth/hair simulation

  • Ability to learn quickly and assimilate new information


Nice to have:

  • Experience with realistic muscle/flesh simulation

  • Working knowledge of Maya rigging and deformation techniques

  • Proficient in ILM internal proprietary tools

This role is Hybrid, which means the employee will be required to work a minimum of 2 days on-site per week at a Company designated location, and occasionally from home.
