The Department of Cinematic Arts and Theatre is a proud member of the UNA School of the Arts, alongside wonderful colleagues from the Departments of Music, Visual Arts & Design, and Entertainment Industry. Our department is home to the prestigious George Lindsey UNA Film Festival, Alabama’s longest-running film festival, which annually attracts a diverse array of filmmakers from all corners of the globe. UNA is also the current host of the highly-regarded Walter Trumbauer High School Theatre Festival, a competitive platform where thousands of high school students showcase their theatrical talents, fostering the next generation of performing artists in the region.
Responsibilities include – Teaching and Mentorship: Teach a 12-credit hour course load per semester; Courses include, but are not limited to, the areas of cinema appreciation, screenwriting, cinematography, film production, video editing, and film directing; Mentor students and assist with their academic and creative projects; Collaborate with film and theatre faculty on experiential learning courses; and provide on-set supervision for off-campus film projects, which may require flexible hours. Creative Work and Research: Continue to produce creative work relevant to the field; and develop and maintain an active research agenda. Departmental Contributions: Attend faculty and departmental meetings; Contribute to curriculum development; Manage department equipment and facilities with student equipment room workers; Perform recruiting activities for the department; Assist with the annual George Lindsey UNA Film Festival; Engage in additional duties tailored to the candidate’s strengths and departmental needs; and foster diversity and inclusion among program students.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities include: Proficiency in film production techniques; Understanding of non-linear editing systems and post-production software (Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere, DaVinci Resolve, After Effects); Familiarity with cinematography equipment (Sony, Canon, ARRI Alexa); and additional experience with AI technology and software (ChatGPT, Midjourney, RunwayML) is advantageous.
Minimum qualifications for this position include a terminal degree (MFA or PhD) in film production or a related field is required; ABD candidates may be considered provided degree has been conferred by the start date of appointment; Experience in teaching film production disciplines is required; and a proven professional track record in film production is required.
