Job Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Department Chair, the Drama teacher will advance the mission of the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities to identify and teach South Carolina’s artistically talented high school students through programs or pre-professional instruction in an environment of artistic and academic excellence. Faculty will also advance the school’s mission by service as a resource for all teachers and students in South Carolina. The job duties of this position include but are not limited to the following:
- Develops and instructs a curriculum in accordance with state and national standards, utilizing the South Carolina Curriculum Standards and the school’s curriculum adopted by the Board of Directors. Organizes and implements an instructional program that support student success in accordance with the Mission and core beliefs of the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities, including development of appropriate differentiated instruction strategies and other mechanisms to meet the needs of the school’s diverse student population.
- Develops in writing and in consultation with the Department Chair/ Administrator, an annual goal in a three-year cycle as part of an ongoing performance evaluation program. One goal should be set in each of these areas: Content, Instructional, and Professional.
- Participates in faculty and departmental meetings, committees, programs, and other events that promote excellence and growth in the department and school. Participates in the audition/admissions review process as requested by the Department Chair/Administrator and demonstrates interest and engagement in student performances and other school-wide activities.
- Demonstrates excellence in one’s own artistic and academic pursuits. Represents SCGSAH and the department through active involvement in professional organizations. Strengthens personnel pursuits and professional ties by participating, exhibiting, performing, and/or making presentations for public groups, districts and schools, parent groups, etc.
- Other related duties as may be assigned by the Department Chair or Administration.

Minimum and Additional Requirements
Bachelor’s or bachelor’s in fine arts degree and/or equivalent professional experience in Theatre and at least three (3) years of successful experience teaching a range of drama classes at the secondary or postsecondary level.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Strong background as a professional and understanding of best practices in theatre.
- Ability to teach multiple area(s) of actor training and/or technical theatre and/or acting for film.

Preferred Qualifications
- Five (5) years of successful experience teaching a range of drama classes at the secondary or postsecondary level.
- Master’s in fine arts or master’s in Theatre or Theatre related studies.
- Experience teaching another area of actor training, such has movement for the actor, technical theatre, or stage combat.
- Experience directing scenes and full-length plays. Significant professional activity as an actor and/or director.
- Demonstrated knowledge and interpersonal skills to work with public school students who have exceptional artistic potential and achievement, other arts and academic educators, and diverse constituencies and cultures.
- Experience teaching and administering summer drama programs for middle/high school students. Experience with outreach and curriculum design for K-12 drama teachers and students.
- Administrative experience such as departmental leadership and/or with recruiting, organizing, leading, representing department and school.
- The preferred candidate will also have a demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion as an educator and artist.
