Information & Responsibilities

CalArts Extended Studies is a self-supporting unit within California Institute of the Arts, providing educational opportunities for creative professionals and life-long learners. CalArts Extended Studies non-degree credit courses reflect the artistic and academic integrity of the degree curriculum at CalArts. Funding is generated through fees collected from a diverse and changing student population. Part-time instructor positions are on a course-by-course contracted basis. The contract is for the duration of the set development period.

Any candidate that is offered employment with CalArts must complete the Form I-9 in accordance with the law. On the form, an employee must attest to their employment authorization. The employee must also present their employer with acceptable documents as evidence of identity and employment authorization. This position is not eligible for visa sponsorship

Course Title: The Art of Filmmaking: Foundations of Space and Time
Course Development Dates: March 11-May 31 (12 weeks)
Course Delivery Dates: TBD

This asynchronous, online course will be developed for the following two formats:

• a self-directed, massive open online course delivered on the Coursera platform, 4 modules, one of the courses in the Coursera Art of Filmmaking Specialization

• an instructor-led, participatory, online course with a smaller class size, delivered on Canvas, CalArts’ learning management system, 6 weekly modules, one of the courses in the Art of Filmmaking Certificate

The instructor will adapt the content for both modes of delivery and teach the course on Canvas.

Course Description:
Time and the organization of space are fundamental to filmmaking. In this course, you will learn foundational principles of filmmaking with an emphasis on the construction of spatial and temporal relationships that explore the interplay between form and content. You will learn how to identify and

articulate formal strategies and develop a critical language around the way meaning is made through images in sequence. Examples will be drawn from a wide range of films across genres including narrative, documentary and experimental film. You will produce short videos based on prompts designed to explore space-time relationships. To complete the assignments a video camera is recommended but a smartphone can be used. Access to, and a working knowledge of editing software such as Adobe Premiere is required.

Learning Outcomes

In this course you will:

• Gain an understanding of how framing, depth, off-screen space, scale, movement, and focus are used in filmmaking

• Explore concepts of timing in filmmaking such as duration, recorded time, mechanized time, iteration, experiential time, and perceived time

• Explore observational strategies in filmmaking through staged and captured events

• Investigate the use of figures in space to create meaning and context

• Develop filmmaking vocabulary and discourse skills

Requirements

The instructor will adapt the content for both modes of delivery and teach the course on Canvas.

Qualifications

• an advanced degree or comparable professional training in filmmaking
• an active professional practice in filmmaking, both production and post-production
• experience with online curriculum development and delivery for adult learners
• excellent interpersonal and presentation, written, and communication skills
