The University of North Carolina School of the Arts, located in Winston‐Salem (“The City of the Arts”), was the first state‐supported, residential school of its kind in the nation. Established by the North Carolina General Assembly in 1963, UNCSA opened in Winston‐Salem in 1965 and became part of the University of North Carolina system in 1972. More than 1,200 students from middle school through graduate school train for careers in the arts. The University of North Carolina School of the Arts is dedicated entirely to the professional training of talented students in the performing, visual, and moving image arts. The chancellor, deans, and faculty work with students in a residential setting to create an educational community that is intimate, demanding, and performance‐centered. Learning is enriched by access to an academic program responsive to a conservatory curriculum. Founded to be both an educational institution and a resource enhancing the cultural life of the state of North Carolina and the Southeast, UNCSA offers numerous public performances, on‐ and off‐campus, as well as community education in the arts.

Position Summary
The School of Filmmaking’s Graduate Program is seeking a candidate for a full-time regular faculty position to begin in the fall of 2024. A qualified candidate will have a proven track record both professionally and pedagogically in the areas of fiction film and television development and production. This appointment is for a mid-career applicant with significant professional accomplishments as a creative producer or writer, with at least three years of teaching at the college level or comparable experience in academic or artistic contexts.

The ideal candidate will also have the versatility and vision to help shape the program to meet the requirements of a constantly evolving profession.
We are a joint program in creative producing and screenwriting. We are looking for a candidate who can teach our core curriculum courses in either of these disciplines. We are also interested in candidates that can add other areas of expertise such as nonfiction filmmaking, directing, experimental film or animation, as well as those who have multi-hyphenate and interdisciplinary approaches to filmmaking.
Description of Responsibilities and Duties
- Teach graduate courses in the areas of creative producing or screenwriting.
- Act as academic advisor and mentor.
- Evaluate students on a regular basis and participate in thesis evaluation at the end of the year.
- Attend Faculty meetings, weekly production meetings, and any other meetings deemed necessary by the dean.
- Assist in the admissions process by interviewing prospective students.
- Participate in student recruitment by traveling to undergraduate colleges to speak about our program.
- Participate on committees as needed.
- Abide by and support all School of Filmmaking policies and procedures as outlined in the School of Filmmaking Student Handbook and Safety Handbook.
- Ability to perform work on campus during the school year.
- Other duties as assigned by the dean.
Required Qualifications
An earned doctorate/terminal degree in the teaching discipline, OR equivalent professional/experiential qualifications, OR equivalent combination of education and professional experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Significant professional accomplishments as a creative producer or writer, with at least three years of teaching at the college level or comparable experience in academic or artistic contexts.
Tenure Information
UNCSA utilizes a multi-year contract system in lieu of tenure.
