This short-film explores Neela relationship with her family and father. It touches on her experiences with

domestic-violence, trauma and finding self-love. The main

themes are belonging, identity, generational trauma,

healing, queer sexuality, body image, self-acceptance and

freedom.

Young Neela (5-7 yrs) brown chubby girl.

Emotional and must be able to act afraid. Parents will be consulted about the scenes and the child will not be exposed to the scenes of

violence. The story portrays the relationship between young Neela and her Father.

Naresh Khare (40- 50)- Indian decent Must speak Hindi fluently and some english Indian Father: Naresh, Neela’s Father, early 40’s, Indian man was the first to immigrate to Canada from his family. Actor must be able to speak Hindi and some English. Neela’s father experienced extreme racism and discrimination moving to Canada in the early 1970’s. He was beaten by his father since he was a young boy. He watched his father beat his mother. This upbringing and the harsh treatment, and suppression of his pain led to deep anger and rage. Men from his culture and time were expected to be “strong” and vulnerability was a sign of weakness. His anger was taken out on his wife and he carried out the cycles of violence. Please note this character will be required to play intense scenes portraying beating and physically abusing a woman.

Rita Khare (early 30’s ) -Indian Mother: Rita Neela’s mother Indian woman who has immigrated to Canada. Actor must be able to

speak Hindi. Neela’s mother is working late shifts at a minimum wage job supporting her family. She is a victim of domestic violence and beaten by her husband. She is a loving mother, protective of her daughter and at all costs will protect the family name. Please note this character will be required to play intense scenes as a victim of domestic violence.
