Responsibilities
The Director of Universal Costume oversees the day-to-day operations for one of the largest Costume Houses in the world, servicing Television, Feature Film, and all other forms of media production across the globe. Located on the backlot at Universal Studios, these departments offer a full suite of production services including rentals, digital pattern/costume design, cage & office rentals, and other custom fabrication services. Serving both internal NBCU clients as well as 3rd party productions, the Director is responsible for identifying opportunities to reduce cost, raise profit margins, and optimize the client experience. Role is accountable for effective business administration, employee engagement, and client relations.

Responsibilities include:

  • Manage P&L for department through daily, weekly, and monthly monitoring of material costs, labor expenses, and revenue streams; determine optimal shifts, workdays/hours, and overtime based on business volume.
  • Partner with Finance and Executives to inform and create annual operating budgets, monthly forecasts, and long-range planning.
  • Oversee office administration functions including customer onboarding, order processing, invoicing/billing, client deals/discounts, credit approvals, dispute resolution, vendor relations, out-of-state shipping, monthly accounting close, etc.
  • Measure and report rental inventory utilization; provide sound recommendations around asset acquisition, liquidation, and merchandising based on category, period, location, and other attributes.
  • Oversee asset processing: acquisition, cataloging, barcoding, inventorying, merchandising, decommissioning, and liquidation.
  • Research, document, and implement continual improvements to operational processes, systems, safety, and departmental policies.
  • Meet with customers to discuss new/continuing show budgets; identify current/future needs and find creative ways to solve production problems.
  • Provide design/consulting services for various productions, on-lot events/seminars, high-profile community/government/industry engagements, and other internal events.
  • Attend Guild and TV Academy meetings, Award dinners, industry panel discussions, and other events that promote the Universal brand and legacy.
  • Partner with internal Marketing and Sales teams to devise ongoing sales and advertising strategies; accountable for driving improved market share, client mix, and overall brand awareness.
  • Solicit and respond to customer feedback, suggestions, and issues.
  • Interface with all employee levels within all departments to ensure full compliance with company policies and procedures.
  • Build and maintain a positive culture that engages employees, creates value for clients, and helps the organization achieve its mission.

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Work experience in film production
  • Work experience in Costume Rental House
  • Highly motivated and resourceful self-starter with a positive attitude
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in business administration, management, accounting, or related field
  • Minimum 7-10 years of experience in a business environment, solving complex operational problems with a proven track record of leadership
  • Skilled in business administration, budgeting, and process improvement
  • Experienced in building and leading diverse teams of both non-union and union staff
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills that drive operational innovation
  • Skilled in inventory/warehouse management
  • Strong background in asset management and the ability to ensure maximum utilization of assets across all productions
  • Outstanding organization, communication, writing, and presentation skills
  • Solid interpersonal and conflict resolution skills with ability to interact with all levels of employees and clients
  • Strong knowledge of the legalities of working in a union environment and the corresponding contracts
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple priorities, client needs, operational issues, and deadlines
  • Skilled in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Ability to build and maintain relationships in design communities, across studio operations, with internal/external productions, and among NBCU executive management
  • Skilled in negotiating win-win deal terms with customers and other internal stakeholders

Desired Characteristics

  • Knowledge of the production process, specifically costuming
  • Knowledge of various Studio departments and production groups
  • Skilled in inventory management systems such as RTPro
  • Ability to instinctually appraise assets based on value, usefulness, rent-ability, etc.
  • Experience working on set and managing production budgets
  • Knowledge of NBCU corporate landscape and administrative processes
  • Artistic ability to understand production and costumer needs
