Full job description

We are delighted to announce an exciting new vacancy for a full time filmmaker / camera operator here at Mallard Productions.

As a team of passionate filmmakers ourselves, we’re really looking for someone who takes pride in their work and is keen to go the extra mile to get that incredible shot. If you enjoy creating the perfect cinematic lighting set up for an interview, are meticulous about capturing crystal clear audio and love making important creative decisions then this may be the perfect job for you.

Quite often you will be self-shooting, adapting to the needs of an ever changing brief and thinking on your feet. Other times you will be a vital piece of a camera crew all working together to produce quality content.

Our projects span many different genres so expect to be involved with corporate, sport, documentary, live content, TV adverts, music videos and lots more. The majority of productions are shot on location but occasionally we do film in studios. Virtually every day you will be filming something different and traveling somewhere new.

Traveling is a big part of the job and you’ll find yourself filming all across Scotland and beyond. Last year alone we filmed in Ireland, England, Spain, Belgium, America, Italy and Germany. All transport and food costs are covered on shoots, and you will also be provided with a company van.

Your day will usually begin with collecting equipment from our studio which is based in a beautiful old farmhouse in Glasgow. Here you can liaise with the pre and post production team and give the office dog a pat (she will demand it) before setting off for your shoot.

You will have access to a vast selection of equipment that we have collected over the last 16 years. This includes cameras, lenses, drones, gimbals, lights, sliders, microphones, teleprompts, jibs, and much more.

This would be the perfect role for a freelancer or self shooter looking to make the transition to a full time position. Experience is really valuable for us but a great attitude, work ethic and talent for producing beautiful content is what we are looking for.

If you enjoy photography and teaching / passing on your camera skills to others this is an added bonus for us!

Responsibilities will include:

  • Filming videos for the corporate, broadcast, sports, music and events sectors
  • Conducting interviews with people on camera
  • Dealing with clients in a professional and polite manner
  • Dealing with rushes and maintaining the safe delivery of footage to the edit suite
  • Making decisions in collaboration with the Project Manager for lighting, sound, camera and lens selection
  • Occasional post production duties, including editing and grading (this will be secondary to camera operation)

The successful applicant will need to be able to:

  • Be able to use a variety of shooting styles. Experience working with steadicams, gimbals, sliders and large sensor cameras will be of benefit but not essential.
  • Hold a full UK Drivers license, or be in the process of obtaining one.
  • Understand that filming can take place at unsociable times and (sometimes) long hours and doesn’t mind working evenings and weekends.
  • Not mind travelling and staying on location during shoots that last multiple days
  • Adapt shooting style to suit the project and work quickly when required
  • Take their own initiative
  • Experience working to tight deadlines and maintain a positive attitude under pressure
  • Understands latest filming techniques and equipment and has a passion for keeping up to date with latest releases
  • Good communication skills

Salary will be between £22 and £30k, based on experience.
