The School of Film & Photography at Montana State University-Bozeman invites applications for a full-time, tenure-eligible Assistant Professor of Film Production beginning August 2024. We aim to find a colleague whose creative work transcends traditional boundaries between film and related media with the ability to teach subjects across the School’s undergraduate and graduate filmmaking curriculum.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain a creative research agenda and record of accomplishment
  • Demonstrate teaching effectiveness and participate in program development and assessment
  • Advise undergraduate students and serve on MFA graduate committees
  • Participate in curriculum development and assessment
  • Contribute to recruitment, retention, and outreach activities
  • Participate in School, College, and University committees

Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  • MFA or other terminal degree in Film, Media Production, or related fields
  • Active filmmaking agenda with a distinguished public record of original creative works and/or comparable professional work in narrative filmmaking
  • Experience in college-level teaching
  • Ability to teach comprehensive undergraduate filmmaking courses
  • Ability to teach upper-division fiction film production
  • Ability to teach specialty courses in one of the following areas: producing, sound production, lighting, cinematography, editing
  • Openness to teaching and mentoring students in an array of filmmaking styles and voices
  • Ability to teach in a diverse university community and support the success of students from diverse backgrounds

Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
Owing to the breadth and integration of our programs, candidates who demonstrate
Experience, Education, Knowledge & additional interest, and expertise in one or more of the following areas will be given preference:
  • Ability to teach nonfiction production courses at the undergraduate level and in our MFA Science and Natural History Program
  • Ability to teach courses in addition to the above in one or more of the following areas: producing, sound production and post-production, lighting, cinematography, editing, post-production workflows, screenwriting, virtual production techniques

The Program
The School of Film and Photography (SFP) offers B.A. programs in film and photography options, a B.F.A. in integrated Lens-Based Media, and an M.F.A. program in Science and Natural History Filmmaking.

The Department
The School of Film and Photography (SFP) is part of the College of Arts and Architecture, including the School of Architecture, School of Art, and the School of Music. SFP represents faculty and students engaged in creating and analyzing film, video, photography, and theatre. The School serves 219 film & video production majors with a unique curriculum that combines film and video production with theatre and critical studies; 84 photography majors with a curriculum that includes traditional, digital, and alternative processes; 43 B.F.A. students in our Integrated Lens-Based Media major representing a fusion of our film and photography curriculums, and 35 M.F.A. candidates in a documentary film and video production program that emphasizes science and natural history filmmaking.

Faculty research interests span various creative disciplines: narrative, documentary, and experimental film production; digital, analog, and alternative process photography; film studies and critical theory; and theater production.

The College
The College of Arts and Architecture is home to distinctive academic programs housed in the Schools of Art, Architecture, Music, and Film & Photography. Students enjoy close mentoring relationships with faculty through a curriculum that is rich in-studio and lab-based pedagogy. The College offers international and cultural travel opportunities for students in all majors and encourages internship experiences for many of its programs.

The College hosts the only accredited Architecture program in Montana and supports a unique, world-class graduate film program in Science and Natural History Filmmaking. Graduates from the College enjoy successful careers in art, design, media and film production, photography, architecture, education, and music as well as apply the discipline, creative problems solving skills and work ethic embedded in their programs to any career.

The College is home to the internationally recognized Montana Shakespeare in the Parks theater company and supports the Black Box Theatre and innovation and design spaces such as the Design Sandbox for Engaged Learning and the Community Design Center.
