Remuneration: $40,000 p.a. 3.5 years full-time rate (pro-rata). Tuition fee scholarship and overseas student health cover (OSHC) may be provided for successful overseas students.

Expressions of interest are sought from outstanding candidates to undertake full-time PhD research at Monash University as part of Monash University’s innovative Graduate Research Industry Partnerships (GRIP) program. The Safe Sustainable Accessible Railway (S 2 ARail) GRIP brings high achieving PhD candidates together with government and industry partners to solve real-world problems involving the railway industry. The S 2 ARail GRIP will draw together the broad expertise of Monash University institutes and faculties to provide innovative and implementable solutions through research and development to the railway industry. The program will deliver an advanced and collaborative professional development program, to foster leaders of the future, and provide opportunity to collaboratively work on projects which have been identified to have direct impact on the rail industry.
The S 2 ARail GRIP is an interdisciplinary program around a major overarching topic (Railways) and undertaking projects from a variety of disciplines supported by academics and professionals from Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Science, Faculty of Information Technology, Monash Art, Design and Architecture (MADA), Monash University Accident Research Centre (MUARC) and Monash Institute of Rail Technology (IRT). The S 2 ARail GRIP is hosted by the Monash Institute of Railway Technology (IRT) under the Faculty of Engineering. This GRIP program is jointly funded by Monash University and key rail industry partners including Keolis Downer, BHP, Rio Tinto, Transdev, Victoria’s Department of Transport and Planning (DTP) and FMG.
The S 2 ARail GRIP allows PhD candidates to develop specialised knowledge in the field, including expertise in areas such as rail infrastructure, operations, safety, sustainability and accessibility. In addition, candidates are honed to become thought leaders for industry through a unique industry-driven interdisciplinary training program, internship opportunities, mentoring and scholarships; developing a range of valuable skills, including critical thinking, problem solving, and project management. Overall, the S 2 ARail GRIP offers a cost-effective range of benefits that can help candidates to develop the skills, knowledge, and experience needed to succeed in this rapidly growing field.
Professional development: As part of the Monash Doctoral Program , S 2 ARail GRIP students will complete a minimum of 120 hours of professional development training.
Eligibility Requirements
Applicants will be considered provided they fulfil the criteria for PhD admission at Monash University and demonstrate excellent research capability. Details of the relevant requirements are available at www.monash.edu/graduate-research/future-students/apply .
Candidates will also be required to meet Monash University’s minimum English language proficiency requirements for entry into a higher degree by research program.
Applications who meet the following criteria will be prioritised:
- Graduated from a well ranked university
- Have authored peer-reviewed research publications
- Possess excellent written and verbal English skills
Note: Applicants who already hold a PhD degree will not be considered.
