Project Type: Feature Film
Job Date: Per Project
Compensation: Paid - Salary

Rodeo FX is hiring a Lighting Artist on a temporary contract basis in Montreal. This role sits within the 3D department and is responsible for designing and delivering final lighting renders to the Compositing team, shaping how CG elements read on screen across VFX production. It suits a mid-to-senior level artist who is comfortable owning shots end-to-end inside a structured VFX pipeline.

About the Role

The Lighting Artist works within Rodeo FX’s 3D department, contributing to feature film and episodic television projects at a studio known for high-end visual effects work. Day-to-day, this means building lighting setups in Houdini, iterating based on dailies notes, and coordinating closely with Compositing and CG Supervisors to keep shots on track. The role sits at a critical handoff point in the post-production workflow, where artistic intent and technical discipline have to work together.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build and refine lighting setups in Houdini for individual shots and sequences, working with rigor and autonomy across all stages of the VFX pipeline.
  • Optimize scene files to manage machine load and render efficiency without pulling the visual quality of the final output.
  • Identify and resolve rendering artifacts or technical issues before submitting shots for review.
  • Translate the project’s visual direction into coherent lighting that supports storytelling, scene depth, and integration with compositing.
  • Participate actively in QC passes, respond quickly to dailies notes, and communicate realistic timelines and any production delays to the team.
  • Document lighting setups and methods in Confluence to support task handovers and share tools or scripts with the broader lighting team.

What You Bring

  • Solid production experience as a Lighting Artist on feature film or episodic television projects within a VFX studio environment.
  • Proficiency in Houdini as the primary lighting and rendering tool, with a working knowledge of scene structure and versioning protocols.
  • A strong understanding of light behavior, shading, and render optimization in a CG context.
  • Experience delivering shots through a multi-department pipeline, including direct handoffs to Compositing.
  • Ability to read and respond to creative briefs from Lighting and CG Supervisors while managing your own shot queue.

Why This Role

Rodeo FX has built a consistent track record on high-profile feature film and streaming productions, and this contract offers direct access to that caliber of work in Montreal. The studio has a structured 3D pipeline and an internal culture that supports sharing knowledge, developing tools, and keeping artists current with industry practices. For a Lighting Artist looking to work at a serious level of production, this is a contract worth pursuing.
