Job Position(s): Senior Directeur Technique des Effets / Senior FX TD 2 Locations
Project Type: Feature Film
Job Date: Full Time
Compensation: Paid - Salary

DNEG is hiring a Senior FX TD for two locations, Montréal, Quebec and Vancouver, Canada, with openings available at both studios simultaneously. This role sits within the Performance department, covering Animation, Creature, and FX work, where the Senior Directeur Technique des Effets is responsible for building and maintaining complex simulation and effects systems that land in final VFX deliverables for feature film and episodic television. It suits an FX technical director who has moved well past the learning curve and wants ownership over challenging shots in a high-volume VFX pipeline.

About the Role

The Senior FX TD works within a department that handles effects ranging from large-scale destruction and fluid simulations to creature-integrated FX and environment work across major productions at DNEG. Day-to-day, this means developing effects setups in response to supervisor notes, troubleshooting sim performance inside the production pipeline, and delivering work that holds up through compositing and final review. The scope of productions this team services runs from studio feature films to premium streaming series, so the work varies and the technical bar is consistently high.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and execute simulations covering rigid body, fluid, pyro, cloth, and particle systems to meet shot requirements as defined by the FX supervisor.
  • Build and refine Houdini-based setups that integrate cleanly with the existing VFX pipeline, ensuring handoffs to lighting and compositing are technically sound.
  • Troubleshoot performance and stability issues in simulation caches, working within production deadlines to resolve problems without sacrificing visual quality.
  • Contribute to the development and documentation of reusable FX tools and rigs that can be shared across the team and applied to future productions.
  • Review dailies with the FX supervisor and respond to creative feedback by adjusting simulation parameters, sourcing geometry, or reworking setups from the ground up when needed.
  • Mentor junior and mid-level FX TDs by reviewing their work technically and helping them develop problem-solving approaches suited to production constraints.

What You Bring

  • Five or more years working as an FX TD in a feature film or episodic television VFX environment.
  • Deep working knowledge of Houdini, including DOPs, SOPs, and VOPs, with a track record of shipping complex simulations on screen.
  • Experience working within a structured VFX pipeline, including familiarity with asset management systems and render farm workflows.
  • Screen credits on at least two significant VFX-heavy productions, whether feature films or premium series.
  • Proficiency in Python or VEX for pipeline scripting and tool development is expected at this level.

Why This Role

DNEG is one of the most consistently credited VFX studios in the industry, with work appearing across major franchise and awards-circuit productions year over year. The dual-location structure of this Senior Directeur Technique des Effets opening means there is real flexibility in where you base yourself while working within the same production infrastructure. For a Senior FX TD looking to work on high-profile projects with a team that takes the technical craft seriously, this is a substantive opportunity.
